Pilgrimage to Zvenigorod
2006-02-24

On February, 23, students of the
Post-Orphanage Education Centre made a pilgrimage to the town of Zvenigorod.
They visited an ancient Kremlin of Zvenigorod, the earthworks of an old
citadel, an ancient Church of the Assumption of the Virgin with frescoes by
St. Andrew Rublev and the monastery of St. Savva of Storozhev.
On the way to Zvenigorod Fr.Petr briefly told the history of this place from the times of Moscow tsardom to the war against Napoleon. He also described various monastic rules and told the history of monasticism in Russia. From this story the students learned about life of St. Sergey of Radonezh and about his monastic school. St. Savva of Storozhev – the founder of the monastery in Zvenigorod – was one of the most prominent disciples of St. Sergey of Radonezh.
An excursion over the monastery was held by a guide from the pilgrimage service of the monastery. ROOF students visited the churches of Transfiguration and Nativity, the skete and the bell-tower of the monastery. Students were invited for lunch in the refectory of the monastery. Here they got a chance to get familiar with the menu and the secrets of monastic "cuisine".
